The Destro - As The Coil Unwinds
by BigMosh aka Danny T. Smith

The Destro “As The Coil Unwinds” is a heavy metal masterstroke, becoming more simplistic in places while expanding the overall template while bringing overall fury and rage to the plate. Having explored their split personalities in great detail on “The Red E.P.”, The Destro pulls it back together for “As The Coil Unwinds”, and in the process they have once again upped the ante on what a Metal band can accomplish.

While there is a bolder use of instrumentation on this release, the rhythms and time changes are quite complicated, giving the songs on “As The Coil Unwinds” a more direct impact. Both the harsher and softer aspects have made the band better-rounded, from the insane double bass and neck snapping snare in "Beast Burden," to the use of razor sharp riffs in “Structures Collapse”. But the integration of the two does mean the band is ready to explode with the full release of “As The Coil Unwinds”.

The Destro is a band that doesn’t rest on its laurels, and As The Coil Unwinds is majestic, epic music. This is a metal album that endeavors to move beyond its specific genre. The songwriting is astutely metal-based and almost grandiose with fluent part changes and transitions. The riffs snarl and screech with harmonic squeals and chugging hunger; the vocals bark and scream before erupting into soaring harmonies; and the rhythm section provides a hearty portion of double kick beat downs and meaty bass playing that doesn't just relentlessly syncopate the guitar.

A solid listen for sure and one that is not only highly anticipated but one that will remain in my cd-player for a long time to come.
