Special Edword - Disguise
By Grady Smith

I first saw Special Edword about a year ago at Dreamworld Music Complex, for what was, I think, their first performance there ever. I was their audience, and I loved it. The room was completely empty except for them and me, but I headbanged like a motherfucker! At the time, I didn’t even know they were playing romance songs, or that a lot of punk rockers would call them an alternative band. All I knew was that their music was fucking bad ass, and it made me want to headbang as hard as I could. I waited a long time to get a copy of their first album, and “Disguise” was definitely worth it. It has a mix of romance and rock, making a kind of hard- alternative music that just plain rules!

The title track has a bad ass two, two, two, two beat, “I will… see you… wake up… with you… I will… confess… no more… no less.” You crank that sucker up and you can really rock out. The same can be said for their most popular song, “Psycho Hoe,” which is my personal favorite, because it’s a glimpse of anger in an otherwise mellow background. Track five, “Hey, Baby” was rhythmic and soothing, making you kind of lay back and smile. The sixth track, “Astrophysics,” is the most romantic song ever. It’s a soft love song about how the love he and his girlfriend feel for each other makes them seem like they are the center of the universe, free floating in space with each other. No wonder they have such a big female following.

The laid-back, mellow sound of Special Edword’s music (even the angry stuff) is created by the use of two (sometimes three) guitars, as well as a romantic passion, and soft, somewhat melancholy vocals. For being unique and mixing rock and romance without too much of one or the other, I give Special Edword’s “Disguise” my highest recommendation.
