Gryn - Our New Earth
by James
For the last three years, the only band in the Dallas scene
that could consistently get me to a show was deadindustry. I
would follow those bastards anywhere within a reasonable driving
distance and I missed very few of their shows. No other band
had ever inspired the kind of loyalty, admiration and pure fanboyism
in me that deadindustry did.....until GRYN.
The first time I saw GRYN, they were opening for deadindustry
and Drowning Pool at the Galaxy Club. They had already started
their set when I got there, but before they finished the song
they were playing as I walked through the door, they had a fan
for life. Before they finished their set, I had both their EPs
in my hand. I knew these guys were destined for great things.
That was October of 99.
Move to the present. GRYN now has a record deal with Last Beat
Records and they have released their first full-length album,
entitled Our New Earth. Ten blistering tracks that will peal
the skin of mainstream half-ass metal fans everywhere. I knew
from the get-go that this would be an excellent CD, because
both of their EPs were top-notch and I had heard the whole thing
live by the time it came out. However, I was not prepared for
how truly amazing this disc is.
As soon as the first track, O.N.E., starts, GRYN takes you on
a hardcore metal joyride that does not stop until the CD is
done. Ben and Jason rip you apart with the guitar, while Jacy
beats you to death with the drums (and Jacy can kick the fuck
out of a bass drum). Then, Brett shreds you with his one-of-a-kind
scream. Not to take away from the rest of the band, but the
thing that keeps he hooked most is Jacy's drum lines. He is,
bar none, one of the best drummers I have ever had the pleasure
of listening to (right up there with Machine Head's first drummer
and the mighty Dave Lombardo, in my humble opinion). He is also
an excellent timekeeper and that is a good thing, because just
when you get into the beat and tempo of a song, they hang a
left ad you're left bobbing your head to the wrong rhythm. Time
changes kick ass, and GRYN uses them to great effect in their
songs. Just listen to Human Warfare a few times and you will
see what I am talking about. Human Warfare is probably one of
the best songs I could pick on this CD to demonstrate GRYN's
amazing talents. Time changes, bad ass riffs, pounding drums
and thumping bass lines tied together in one very tight, very
heavy package. |
